چکیده

The evaluation of beta-adrenergic blockade in cardiac arrhythmias is difficult because of the complex nature of the arrhythmias and the varied modes of action of blocking drugs. Studies have confirmed the therapeutic value of the betaadrenergic blocking drug pronethalol (Alderlin) (Vaughan Williams, 1963 ; Stock and Dale, 1963 ; Payne and Senfield, 1964; Wolfson et al., 1966) and its more potent successor, propranolol (Inderal) in the management of many different atrial and ventricular arrhythmias (Harrison et al., 1965; Sloman et al., 1965 ; Stock, 1966; Harris, 1966; Szekely et al., 1966; Cherchi et al., 1966; Rochet and Vastesaeger, 1966; Gettes and Surawicz, 1966; Luria et al., 1966; Epstein and Braunwald, 1966). This study reports our experience in the management of patients with paroxysmal arrhythmias, acute life-threatening arrhythmias, and recurrent arrhythmias associated with prolonged cardiac arrest. An attempt has also been made to assess the prophylactic value of propranolol in reducing the high incidence of arrhythmias associated with acute myocardial infarction.

Sex influences the susceptibility to reperfusion-induced sustained ventricular tachycardia and beta-adrenergic receptor blockade in conscious rats.

Reperfusion after a brief period of cardiac ischemia can lead to potentially lethal arrhythmias. Importantly, there are sex-related differences in cardiac physiology and in the types and severity of cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that gonadal hormones influence the susceptibility to reperfusion-induced sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT), as well as the response to ...

Mechanism of cardiovascular changes produced in cats by activation of the central nervous system with picrotoxin.

The mechanism of cardiovascular changes produced by activation of the central nervous system with picrotoxin (2 mg/kg, iv) was studied in chloralose-anesthetized cats. Effects occurred in two phases. During the early phase, there were decreases in arterial blood pressure and heart rate, and in a few cats, bradyarrhythmias. These changes were transient and superceded by an increase in arterial b...

Ability of glucagon to produce cardiac stimulation without arrhythmias in halothane-anaesthetized animals.

The cardiovascular effects of glucagon were determined in cats and dogs anaesthetized with halothane. Glucagon increased heart rate and myocardial contractility but did not produce ventricular arrhythmias. Adrenaline and isoprenaline, which also increased heart rate and myocardial contractility, did produce ventricular arrhythmias. The cardiac stimulant effects of glucagon were not prevented by...

Propranolol Hydrochoride Tablets USP Rx only

Propranolol is a nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent possessing no other autonomic nervous system activity. It specifically competes with beta-adrenergic receptor agonist agents for available receptor sites. When access to beta-receptor sites is blocked by propranolol, the chronotropic, inotropic, and vasodilator responses to beta-adrenergic stimulation are decreased proportion...

Beta-blockers prevent subacute recurrences of persistent atrial fibrillation only in patients with hypertension.

AIM Differential drug treatment guided by the underlying heart disease may improve outcome of rhythm control therapy. In the present study we investigated in a well-defined group with either lone atrial fibrillation (AF) or hypertension whether there were differences in rhythm control outcome between both groups in relation to the use of cardiovascular drugs. METHODS AND RESULTS One hundred s...
